Causal Processes and Propensities in Quantum Mechanics

In an influential article published in 1982, Bas Van Fraassen developed an argument against causal realism on the basis of an analysis of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations of quantum mechanics. Several philosophers of science and experts in causal inference – including some causal realists like Wesley Salmon – have accepted Van Fraassen’s argument, interpreting it as a proof that the qua...

Local Observables in Quantum Theory

The Pauli theory of electrons is formulated in the language of multivector calculus. The advantages of this approach are demonstrated in an analysis of local observables. Planck’s constant is shown to enter the theory only through the magnitude of the spin. Further, it is shown that, when obtained as a limiting case of the Pauli theory, the Schrödinger theory describes a particle with constant ...

Entropy bound and local quantum field theory

I comment on Ulvi Yurtsever’s result, which states that the entropy of a truncated bosonic Fock space is given by a holographic bound when the energy of the Fock states is constrained gravitationally. The derivation given in Yurtsever’s paper contains an subtle mistake, which invalidates the result. A more restrictive, non-holographic entropy bound is derived. PACS numbers: 04.70.-s, 03.67.-a

Optimal local propensities for model proteins.

Lattice models of proteins were used to examine the role of local propensities in stabilizing the native state of a protein, using techniques drawn from spin-glass theory to characterize the free-energy landscapes. In the strong evolutionary limit, optimal conditions for folding are achieved when the contributions from local interactions to the stability of the native state is small. Further in...
